Implementation and Economic Analysis of Intelligent Agent-Based Systems for Enhanced Electrical Distribution Network

Abstract

Modern electrical distribution systems are undergoing significant changes from passive infrastructure to intelligent, actively managed networks. This research presents a comprehensive techno-economic evaluation of deploying intelligent agent-based automation systems within medium-voltage distribution networks. The study examines a multi-agent system (MAS) framework designed for autonomous fault identification, isolation, and service restoration, with additional capabilities for network loss minimization through dynamic reconfiguration. A detailed case study analyzes the implementation on a 20 kV underground distribution segment comprising 62 transformers, encompassing investment requirements, return on investment calculations, and reliability enhancement metrics. The analysis demonstrates that intelligent automation systems provide substantial economic benefits through reduced outage durations (from 120 minutes to 1 minute), improved service quality indices and operational efficiency gains. The comprehensive benefit analysis, including revenue protection (USD 47,300 annually), reliability incentives (USD 31,700), operational savings (USD 7,200), and loss reduction (USD 8,255), yields an 11.3-year payback period for the  USD 1,066,400 investment.
